AFC Greenwich Borough is pleased to confirm the appointment of Perry Skinner as the club’s new Vice Chairman.
Perry Skinner is a familiar name in local football. Alongside his late brother David, he played a key role in building Greenwich Borough FC and helping to put non-league football in this part of southeast London on the map. His return to the boardroom at AFC Greenwich Borough reflects a shared ambition to create a sustainable club that represents the borough, its communities and its football people.
Chairman Paul Whitehead explained how the appointment came about.
“Back in June, when we formed AFC Greenwich Borough’s men’s first team, one of the first things I tried to do was understand the history of Greenwich Borough FC. I wanted to know who had been involved, which supporters and volunteers had carried it, and how we might reconnect with them in the right way.
When Perry got in touch with me I was on holiday. I called him back straight away and we spoke for a long time. It was obvious very quickly that we shared the same vision. His story, and what he and David had tried to build in Greenwich, was exactly the kind of connection I had been looking for. Bringing him in as Vice Chairman feels like the natural next step for this club.”
For Perry, the decision to return to football in the Royal Borough of Greenwich was driven by both emotion and alignment with what AFC Greenwich Borough are trying to achieve.
“When I first saw what was happening here, with the youth teams, the women’s sides, the vets and the scholarship programme, it felt like déjà vu. It was the same ambition me and my brother had years ago, but this time with the structure and people in place to really push it on.
David is a huge part of why I care about the club. To come back into football in Greenwich, with people who share that drive and want to do it properly, means a lot to me. I am proud to be involved, and I want to help the club go as far as it possibly can, in the right way.”
Both Paul and Perry are clear that “the right way” means putting supporters, volunteers and the local community at the centre of the project and building a club that is self-sustaining, rather than dependent on a single benefactor. That philosophy runs through the work being done on and off the pitch at AFC Greenwich Borough, from the first team to the academy and community programmes.
On the pitch, the men’s first team are currently second in the league and unbeaten in league football this season. We play our home games at Holmesdale Football Club, 68 Oakley Rd, Bromley BR2 8HQ, and we’d love to see supporters make the short trip to get behind the side while we continue to build towards our future move back into the borough at GB10 in New Eltham, SE9 2SZ.
As Vice Chairman, Perry will work alongside Paul, the board and the wider leadership team to:
- Support the long term vision for AFC Greenwich Borough
- Strengthen links with people and organisations who have been part of football in the borough
- Help ensure the club develops on stable, sustainable foundations
Most importantly, Perry’s appointment is a message to everyone who has ever been part of the Greenwich football story that they are welcome here.
“If you supported, volunteered for, played for or backed Greenwich Borough in the past, we would love to see you again,” said Perry. “Come down to our home games at Holmesdale, get behind the team and be part of where this club is going next. It will feel familiar, but with a fresh start and a chance to finish the journey we began all those years ago.”
In the coming days, we will share a full video interview with Paul and Perry, where they talk in more depth about Perry’s journey, David’s influence and their shared hopes for the future of AFC Greenwich Borough.
For now, everyone at the club would like to officially welcome Perry as Vice Chairman and invite supporters, old and new, to join us on the next chapter of football in the borough.
